HYDRO: POWERING
THE PROVINCE
FOR SIXTY YEARS

NOVEMBER 2011

BOOK DESIGN

In May 1951 the first members of the Manitoba Hydro-Electric Board were appointed. Their mandate was “to provide for the continuance of a supply of power adequate for the needs of the province, and to promote economy and efficiency in the generation, distribution, and supply of power.” Many things have changed in the ensuing six decades, but Manitoba Hydro continues to carry out that mandate for the people of Manitoba.

This book chronicles the history of Manitoba Hydro and pays tribute to the foresight and hard work of generations of Manitobans.

OCTOBER 2011

BRANDING/WEBSITE/VIDEO

It’s easy to see why many consider Altona the best place to live in Manitoba. Surrounded by lush farmland and the sweet smell of country air, this beautiful oasis on the prairies offers a quality of life that is altogether hard to beat.

The new Altona wordmark projects the town as modern and forward-thinking, while giving a nod to Altona’s rich history of cultural expression. The customized typeface is loosely based on the distinct handwriting style of Vincent van Gogh, who’s work is prominently featured on the town’s world-record-sized easel. It is designed using contrasting thick and thin strokes to mimic the look created by a painter’s brush, a further hint at Altona’s love for the arts. Lastly, the capital ‘A’ has been stylized to look like a star which is a subtle tie-in to Altona’s geological position in the sunny Pembina Valley.

The tagline ‘Altogether’ speaks to the brand essence of Altona as a safe, caring, entrepreneurial and progressive community, where the people make the difference and support each other by working together. The people of Altona come together as citizens and volunteers whenever the need arises — for special events, capital projects, or simply to lend a neighbour a hand — the people of Altona step-up and get involved.

William Kurelek:

September 2011

HTML5 WEBSITE DEVELOPMENT

William Kurelek: The Messenger, is an online exhibition designed in conjunction with the first retrospective exhibition of the art of William Kurelek (1927–1977) in over 25 years, and the largest to date. The exhibition is scheduled at the Winnipeg Art Gallery in fall 2011, the Art Gallery of Hamilton in winter 2012, and the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria in summer 2012. The exhibition was developed by these three partnering institutions.

At this multimedia site, visitors can access information about William Kurelek, as well as images of the over 80 works of art in the exhibition. There is also an educational site intended for teachers and students, grades 1 to 8.

“Kurelek.ca will be available for online viewing for the next five years. I highly recommend this site for both Kurelek admirers and people unfamiliar with this iconic Canadian painter. Give yourself an hour on the website and you will come away feeling incredibly familiar with this man (and that hour will fly by, believe me).” – Mike Green, CBC

This project is generously funded by the Canadian Government through the Department of Canadian Heritage Museums Assistance Program.

ANTON CHEKHOV’s
THREE SISTERS
ON THE PLAINS

AUGUST 2011

Theatre Projects Manitoba: has been playing on the plains since 1990. Committed to the cultivation of Manitoba plays and artists, in the past 21 years, TPM have staged more than 50 new Manitoba works. They have developed the voices of our region, choosing stories that have a connection to our community, our history and culture and grow these new creations with passionate support. This year, TPM will kick off the season with a NEW adaptation of Anton Chekhov’s Three Sisters.

110 years after its Moscow premiere, Bruce McManus weaves a prairie story from the threads of the original—faithful to the tragic comedy of Chekhov’s characters in an environment often hostile to dreams. He gives us a play about the Canadian prairie experience at a time when the nation and our place in the world were on the brink of great change.

Three Sisters features Ardith Boxall, Andrew Cecon, Carolyn Gray, Patricia Hunter, Krista Jackson, Tom Keenan, Omar Khan, Erin McGrath, Rob McLaughlin, Harry Nelken, and Gordon Tanner

October 6 – 1 6, 2 011

A SIMULATION
LEARNING
EXPERIENCE

JUNE 2011

The Manitoba Institute for Patient Safety has a new learning initiative that gives healthcare educators the tools to simulate patient safety situations that occur in health care settings. Learn to be Safe – A Simulation Learning Experience is in a kit format. With the tool kit, students and practitioners can rehearse for safety.

It is aimed at enhancing effective communication and collaboration within healthcare teams, including patients and their families, to improve patient safety. Learners role play characters based on a specific patient story or are observers. The stories are based on real patient safety situations and events. Learners practice in a safe environment under the guidance of a leader.

The 2011 JNF Negev Gala Concert, held on May 31st, was a great celebration
of Manitoba’s special relationship with Israel, and will further those ties
by funding research in Oak Hammock Marsh in Manitoba and its sister marsh in
the Hula Valley in Israel.

The Honouree of this year’s event was Manitoba Minister of Water Stewardship
Christine Melnick, who has brought her positive spirit to citizens in both
Manitoba and Israel and has done much to encourage innovation in areas of
water stewardship and environmental education.

The entertainment at the concert was Sela Adom, an Israeli band which
entertained the audience with its performance of songs from the birth of the
Israeli state to today, providing a delightful show for people of all ages.

MMMMMM
New Museum
New Fun!

JUNE 2011

On Saturday, June 4 at 10AM sharp, construction ground to a halt at the Children’s Museum at The Forks as dozens gathered to watch a rather unusual scene. Bagpiper Jimm Simon, surrounded by a cast a colourful characters including The Mayor, The Artist, Field Trip Kid, and The Conductor, lead a procession featuring two very special guests to the front of the line at today’s Grand Opening event.

Sisters Keila & Nikki R. were the last two children to leave the old galleries on the day the Children’s Museum closed for renovations in September 2010 – however, they were back this morning (and maybe just a little bit shy!) to begin the day’s festivities by cutting the large red entrance ribbon and releasing all the FUN inside the new Children’s Museum for everyone to share. They did a wonderful job, as moments after the girls cut the ribbon, the crowd’s silence was broken by the excited cheers of those seeing the museum’s 12 new galleries for the first time.

The Children’s Museum is now open to the public! Plan your next visit today. The party continued throughout the day with performances by Jacques Chenier and Evan Morgan, and many helpings of tasty birthday cake too, as the Children’s Museum celebrated its 25th Birthday alongside the reopening of its galleries.
