DESCENDING
FROM NO
MOUNTAINOUS INSIGHT

JANUARY 2011

The fiction imprint of Great Plains Publications, Enfield & Wizenty, presents the first issue of an online literary magazine: www.thewinnipegreview.com. The Winnipeg Review publishes on-line every quarter, with weekly updates, from its eponymous home. Like the inhabitants of this midcontinental city, TWR is always opinionated, occasionally cranky, and ethnically confused. It exists to review literary books, mostly Canadian fiction, and to showcase interviews, excerpts of fiction and non fiction, poems, articles, and columns by writers with something to say.

THERE IS NOTHING
ORDINARY ABOUT
THIS RAG

June 2010

Maple Leaf Rag is a dynamic, jazz-infused riff on Canadian culture. With rhythm and edge, Kaie Kellough’s verbal soundscape explores belonging, dislocation and relocation, and national identity from a black Canadian perspective. This collection of poems is both written word and musical score — a dictated dub replete with references to African Canadian and African American culture (current and dated), Canadian history and politics, and characters ranging from dancers to piano players to boxers.

UNIQUE PROJECT

The Alexander River is a polluted cross-border river which flows down from the Samarian hills on the Palestinian side to its estuary at the Mediterranean Sea in Emek Hefer on the Israeli side. The Alexander River Restoration Administration, in which the JNF plays a leading role, is the only current example of its kind involving cooperation between Israelis and Palestinians on environmental issues, with results which are visible on the ground.

Since the event’s inception in 1989, during which a single award (the McNally Robinson Book Award) was presented, The Manitoba Book Awards (formerly the Manitoba Writing and Publishing Awards) has grown to feature 13 categories. Nominees and winners are selected by jurors drawn from across Manitoba and Canada.

The Manitoba Writers’ Guild formed in 1981 to promote writing throughout Manitoba, and remains committed to providing personal and professional support to writers at any level in their careers, and enhancing the province’s literary community. The Association of Manitoba Book Publishers represents 14 Manitoban publishing houses, which publish over 100 books each year in English, French, and Cree. Many of these books are written by Manitoban authors or feature Manitoban stories.

The award administrators gratefully acknowledge the support of McNally Robinson Booksellers, Aqua Books, Friesens the Province of Manitoba; the Department of Culture, Heritage and Tourism; the Winnipeg Arts Council; and the Manitoba Arts Council.

Who is 11th Place

and super happy

about that?

We are! For a bunch of misfit, out-of-shape paper pushers – 11th place is a awesome place to be amongst 38 teams – many seasoned rowers. The proceeds of this years festival got to HSC Foundation – and we are super happy about that too.
