TWO WAYS OF
KNOWING IS
GROUND-BREAKING

February 6, 2010

To celebrate the 2010 International Polar Year, the WSO presents a concert featuring new works by it’s Composer-In-Residence Vincent Ho and this year’s Canadian distinguished guest composer Derek Charke inspired by their Arctic journeys. This evening brings together many of the top climate change scientists from all over the world and will include a special presentation by Dr. David Barber, launching his book “Two Ways of Knowing.”

For David Barber, Lead Scientist of the Circumpolar Flaw Lead (CFL) System Study, climate change is not a debate – it’s a reality that he and so many others have witnessed first-hand within the frozen majesty of the Arctic. Aboard the Amundsen ice breaker and through the unique eyes of passengers and would-be story tellers from all walks of life, Two Ways of Knowing weaves unique environmental perspectives with the backdrop of a diminished ice land, the levels of which have not been seen in over a million years. From the outset, Relish sought to fully highlight Doug Barber’s stunning imagery through the use of a decidedly minimalist layout. The result is an almost three-hundred page journal and canvas that must be witnessed first-hand in order for it’s complete impact to be felt. From the scientific accounts of world-class researchers to the traditional insights of the land’s ancestors, from inspirations enjoyed by Composer Vincent Ho to the journalistic revelations of Peter Mansbridge – Two Ways of Knowing offers a privileged look at Earth’s primary example of climate change in action.

This incredible compilation is a monumental achievement by David & Doug Barber and will provide inspiration and financial support for the further study of climate change, with all proceeds going to the creation of bursaries at the University of Manitoba in support of exploration in the field of Arctic System Science.
